A Christian is a slave of Jesus, Purchased by Him

You can see that "Christian" contains the name of Christ. A Christian is a Christ-one or one who is of Christ. The definition goes further than this, however. You have heard that Jesus said, "No man can serve two masters." The term "Master" is important since it implies slavery. Slave Masters own their slaves and often branded them with their mark (yes, like cattle). Slavery has a terrible reputation among Americans and most modern nations, but in the Roman Empire, slavery was a way of life. The apostle Paul said, "But now having been set free from sin, and having become slaves of God, you have your fruit to holiness, and the end, everlasting life" (Romans 6:22). You may have heard terms used like redemption. Well, to redeem means to buy or take back. Christians have been redeemed by the blood of Christ, purchased by Christ, and are owned by Him. We see this ownership transference occur at baptism. We are baptized "into the name of" Jesus Christ (1 Cor. 1:13). This is akin to transferring ownership of your car. You pull out the title and transfer ownership "into the name" of the purchaser. The car then belongs to another person. As someone owned by Jesus Christ, a Christian is bound by His laws to serve Him faithfully or be punished for lack of faithfulness.
